Understanding wrinkles
Wrinkles can develop from repeated facial movement, reduced collagen, sun exposure, dryness, skin thinning or loss of facial volume.
Treatment selection should depend on whether the lines are dynamic, visible at rest, related to skin texture or caused by structural volume changes.
Common signs
- Forehead lines
- Frown lines
- Crow's feet
- Fine lines
- Deeper facial folds
- Crepey texture
Possible contributing factors
- Repeated muscle movement and facial expression
- Cumulative ultraviolet exposure
- Reduced collagen and skin thinning with age
- Dehydration and impaired skin barrier
- Smoking, sleep and lifestyle factors
- Volume loss changing how the skin folds

How these treatments differ
Dynamic wrinkles appear with movement and are usually addressed with wrinkle relaxers. Static wrinkles remain visible at rest and often respond better to skin-quality treatments, resurfacing or fillers. Folds related to volume loss — such as the nasolabial area — are structural, so relaxing the muscle rarely helps and volume or lifting approaches are considered instead. Many plans combine categories rather than relying on one treatment.
Who may consider treatment
- People whose lines are mainly movement-related
- People with early static lines seeking texture improvement
- People whose folds relate to volume change rather than movement
- People wanting a preventative, maintenance-style plan
